Review of Copper/brass Gua Sha tool from Leta Herman
Updated: Feb 6, 2020
I first met Leta years ago when I decided to enter the world of gua sha. I took her cours and I immediately fell in love with both the modality and Leta's impressive amount of knowledge when it came to oriental medicine. Years later, I took a cupping course from her and then a few years later she came out with a facial cupping and gua sha course which I couldn't resist taking. That's when I saw her cool little copper tool and I knew I just had to get my hands on it (no pun intended).
Now my previous experience with metal (medical grade stainless steel) tools has not been a positive one as most are too thick and bulky to release sha. They are heavy in hand and fatiguing, but if this copper tool was good enough for Leta then that was good enough for me.
Copper is said to be effective at releasing heat from the body (we call this effect dispersing ) making it the ideal tool for gua sha as sha is considered a heat toxin. The copper makes it an excellent choice when treating acute conditions as well as it can effectively reduce inflammation. This tool is thin enough to release sha quickly and effectively while being comfortable for the client. There is no need to press hard with this tool and its extremely light in hand. It can be used on both the face and the body. I love using this along the eyebrows and forehead and it fits perfectly around the nose so you can really get into the nooks and crannies of the face. Copper may help increase collagen and elastin production, may help repair damaged skin tissue and even boost hyaluronic acid production resulting in an increase in skin hydration. I also really like using this on wrinkles, laugh lines and scars. This gua sha tool would make a great self care tool for clients in between treatments with proper instructions. The only downside to the copper material is that it is not appropriate for high level disinfection with hydrogen peroxide as this will compromise the tool.
I'm so grateful for getting to know Leta. Gua sha has helped me become a better therapist and has inspired me to grow and explore the world of alternative healing modalities. May this tool bring you equal happiness if you decide to bring her into your home/clinic.
